The road beneath my bare feet is cold and the cobblestones are sharp and cut into me. I feel the wind on my arms and immediately the goosebumps form. It is cold and dark. I feel alone. I look ahead and see something shining and gleaming in the distance. I take a few steps to get closer to the shining object, I lose my footing because the stones are wet and slippery. Finally I reach the object and bend down to pick it up. Once it is in my hand I recognise that it is a pebble. But not just any pebble it is a golden glimmering pebble.
I look at it again and realise that there is something written on the pebble, but there isn't enough light to make out what it says. I put it into my pocket and continue making my way through the cobblestoned tunnel.
A little further along I see another golden pebble and I pick it up and place it in my pocket. I am perplexed what are these glimmering pebbles doing in this dark cavernous tunnel?
I continue my journey, painstakingly edging forward towards .... towards what I don't know but I continue forward, always forward. Never looking back to see how far I've come.
Up ahead I see more glimmering pebbles leading the way and guiding me through the tunnel. Eventually I come to a clearing and find somewhere to sit and rest and to tend to my cut feet.
I am now sitting in a cave and the glow from the pebbles is warming me and providing me with some light. I pull out the pebbles from my pocket to inspect them further to see if I can make out what is written on them. On the first pebble I see a name that I recognise and I am amazed that when I look at the second pebble it is also a name that I recognise.
It takes me a minute to realise that these are the names of strong people that I know who have walked this same road before me and who have reached the other side and who are giving me the strength to walk this same tunnel. They are providing me with the light and the warmth to continue this lonely journey. Although they may not be there with me I can feel their collective strength serving as a beacon of hope for me to continue along the cobblestoned path and to reach the other side.
Suddenly the pain from my feet is gone and I am no longer cold. My strength has been renewed. I continue along my journey no longer alone.
