The last few days have not been easy ...
When I arrived at the hospital the anesthetist gave me something to calm me. This helped me tremendously as I was able to sleep for two hours while I waited for my turn in the operating room.
Before they wheeled me into theatre I remember the surgeon saying that the CA125 blood test was normal and not to worry about the cyst on the ovary. They would continue to monitor it to ensure that it was nothing. This was another relief for me.
Then I was wheeled into theatre and placed onto the operating table. I expected it to be cold beneath me but to my surprise I found it to be quite warm. The nurse explained that they heat it for extra comfort!
The anesthetist prepared my arm for the IV and my arms were placed on extensions that were wheeled to each side of the bed. The the anesthetist gave me the oxygen mask and told me to take deep breaths and I would fall asleep. I thought to myself there is no way I'm going to fall asleep I'm so wide awake. So I took another deep breath and that's all I remember.
I was asked to open my eyes and they felt so heavy, like lead. I tried to open them and look around but I don't remember if I succeeded nor do I know how long I remained in post op.
Eventually the nurse said to me that she would wheel me to my room and that my family was waiting to see me. As she wheeled me past them their heads popped up like meerkats! Johny, Mommy, Mick, Nats and Kostoula. The nurse said I have an amazing support system.
She wheeled me to my room and took the oxygen mask off my face and then told them they could come to the room. Have them there with me reaffirmed to me that I can do this because I am not alone. I am so lucky to have so many people around me who love me and who are prepared to walk this long road with me.
